CDCS® Certification Programme

A programme built by people who have refused presentations, not just read about them.

Eight modules, real document sets, timed mocks marked with individual feedback, and direct faculty access until the day you sit the exam.

Certified Documentary Credit Specialist

The credential that proves you can read a credit the way a bank does.

CDCS is the global benchmark for documentary credit practitioners. It tells employers, correspondents and clients that you can examine a presentation, apply UCP 600 and ISBP 821 correctly, and defend your decision when money is on the line.

It is also a hard exam. Most candidates do not fail because they lack experience — they fail because the exam tests rules with a precision that day-to-day desk work never demands. That gap is what this programme is built to close.

Who it's for

  • Trade finance officers

Working in issuing, advising, confirming or negotiating banks and ready to formalise their expertise.

  • Document checkers & back-office teams

Examining presentations daily and wanting the rule-level precision the exam demands.

  • Corporate trade & treasury staff

On the applicant or beneficiary side, dealing with banks that hold the interpretive advantage.

  • Compliance & audit professionals

Reviewing trade transactions who need documentary credit fluency to assess them properly.

The syllabus

Eight modules, built around where candidates actually lose marks.

Sequenced so each module earns the next. Modules 03 and 04 carry the most weight, because document examination is where the exam is decided.
  1. 01

    Foundations of documentary credits

How a credit actually moves — the parties, the obligations each one takes on, and where liability sits at every step.

    • Parties & their undertakings
    • Credit lifecycle
    • Availability & payment terms
    • Advising and confirming
  2. 02

    UCP 600, article by article

A working command of all 39 articles — not memorised, but understood well enough to apply under exam pressure.

    • Articles 1–17 in depth
    • Complying presentation
    • Bank obligations
    • Common misreadings
  3. 03

    ISBP 821 and document examination

The practice standard that decides most real discrepancies. This is where the exam is won or lost.

    • Invoices & drafts
    • Certificates of origin
    • Data conflict
    • Discrepancy drills
  4. 04

    Transport & insurance documents

Bills of lading, air waybills, multimodal and insurance documents — examined line by line against the credit.

    • On-board notations
    • Charter party B/L
    • Transhipment
    • Insurance cover & dates
  5. 05

    Specialised credit structures

Where straightforward rules stop being straightforward, and where exam case studies concentrate.

    • Transferable credits
    • Back-to-back
    • Revolving credits
    • Red & green clause
  6. 06

    Standbys, guarantees & collections

The instruments beyond the commercial credit, and the separate rulebooks that govern each of them.

    • ISP98
    • URDG 758
    • URC 522 collections
    • URR 725 reimbursements
  7. 07

    Compliance, sanctions & fraud

Screening, red flags, and the point at which a compliance concern overrides a documentary obligation.

    • Sanctions screening
    • AML red flags
    • Fraud indicators
    • Sanctions clauses in credits
  8. 08

    Exam technique & timed mocks

Reading questions correctly, managing three hours, and full mock papers marked with individual feedback.

    • Question dissection
    • Time management
    • Full mock exams
    • Individual feedback

The Edge Method

Experience isn't the problem. Precision is.

Six things this programme does differently — each one aimed at the specific reason capable practitioners still fail this exam.
  • Taught by practitioners, not lecturers

Every session is led by someone who has examined presentations, refused documents, and defended those refusals to a correspondent bank. The examples are real because the careers behind them are.

  • Discrepancy drills on real document sets

You will work through genuine presentations and find the discrepancies yourself. Reading about ISBP 821 and applying it under time pressure are different skills, and only one of them is examined.

  • Every answer mapped back to a rule

We never leave an answer at 'that's how it's done'. Each one is traced to the specific article or paragraph — which is exactly how the examiner expects you to reason.

  • Timed mocks with individual feedback

Full-length papers under exam conditions, marked and returned with a breakdown of where you lost marks and why. You walk into the real exam having already sat it.

  • Doubt clearing that doesn't expire

Questions rarely arrive on schedule. You keep direct access to the faculty through to your exam date, not just for the duration of the sessions.

  • Built around working professionals

Sessions are structured for people holding down a full trade finance role. Nothing here assumes you can take a month off to study.

Questions

What candidates ask before they enrol.

If your question isn't here, email us — you'll get a straight answer, including when the honest answer is that this isn't the right cycle for you.
  • Do I need banking experience to take CDCS?

The awarding body recommends practical experience in documentary credits before attempting the exam, and the paper assumes familiarity with how a trade finance desk operates. If you are new to the field, speak to us first — we will tell you honestly whether to sit this cycle or build experience and target the next one.

  • How much study time should I plan for?

Most candidates holding a full-time trade finance role find that steady weekly study across the programme works far better than concentrated revision near the exam. The rules reward repeated exposure, not cramming. We will give you a week-by-week plan at the start.

  • What happens if I don't pass?

TODO(client): state your policy clearly — for example free repeat access to the next batch. A specific, confident answer here removes the single biggest hesitation a candidate has before enrolling.

  • Are the sessions recorded?

Yes. Every session is recorded and available for the duration of the programme, so a work trip or a late presentation never costs you a module.

  • Do you train teams as well as individuals?

We do. Alongside CDCS preparation we run in-house corporate training on UCP 600 and ISBP 821, shaped around the transactions your team actually handles and the rejections they are actually getting.

  • Do you offer support beyond the exam?

Yes — our advisory practice works on live transactions: L/C review and structuring, document preparation and pre-checks, financing and risk protection, and dispute resolution when a presentation is refused.
